Who Needs a New Zealand eTA?
You need a New Zealand eTA if:
You are a citizen of a visa-waiver country
You are travelling to New Zealand for a short visit
You are entering New Zealand by air or cruise ship
This includes travellers visiting for tourism, short business activities, family visits, or those transiting through New Zealand.
Important exceptions
Each traveller must have their own approved New Zealand eTA, including children and infants, regardless of the length of stay.
What Does a New Zealand eTA Allow You to Do?
With a valid New Zealand eTA, you may:
Travel to New Zealand for tourism or permitted short business activities
Enter New Zealand multiple times while the eTA remains valid
Stay for up to three(3) months per visit for most travellers, or up to six(6) months for eligible passport holders, subject to conditions set on arrival
A New Zealand eTA does not allow you to work for a New Zealand employer or undertake long-term study. Separate visas are required for employment and an extended study period.
How Long is a New Zealand eTA Valid?
A New Zealand eTA is usually valid for up to two(2) years from the date of approval.
During this period, you can travel to New Zealand multiple times, provided you continue to use the same passport and meet all entry conditions.
In some cases, the validity period may be shorter depending on individual circumstances.
How Does the Application Process Work?
Applying for a New Zealand eTA is completed entirely online. Many applications are approved quickly, often within minutes, although some may take longer if additional checks are required.
Travellers should apply in advance of their planned departure to avoid unnecessary delays.
