How to Apply for a New Zealand eTA (NZeTA)

Applying for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a straightforward online process for eligible travellers who can enter New Zealand without a traditional visa. Travellers are advised to apply well in advance of departure to allow sufficient processing time.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, please confirm that your nationality is eligible for an NZeTA. The NZeTA is required for passport holders from visa-waiver countries, eligible cruise ship passengers, and certain transit travellers.

It also applies to certain Chinese and Pacific Islands passport holders travelling to New Zealand from Australia.

If you are not eligible for an NZeTA, you will need to apply for a visitor visa instead.

Your passport must remain valid for the duration of your entire stay. The NZeTA is electronically linked to the passport used at the time of application.

Step 2: Understand the International Visitor Levy

Most travellers must pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when applying for an NZeTA. Some travellers are exempt.

Step 3: Prepare the Required Information

Most applications do not require document uploads. Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A valid passport from an eligible country

  • A current email address

  • A debit or credit card for payment

  • Personal and passport details

  • Travel and background information

  • Health and character declarations

All information must be accurate. Errors or inconsistencies can delay processing or lead to refusal.

Step 4: Complete the Online Application

The NZeTA application is completed online through official channels managed by Immigration New Zealand. The process usually takes only a few minutes.

After submission, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application.

Step 5: Receive Your NZeTA Decision

Many applications are approved within minutes, but travellers should allow up to 72 hours for a decision to be made. In some cases, additional checks may require more time.

It is recommended not to finalise non-refundable travel bookings until your NZeTA has been approved.

Step 6: Travel to New Zealand

Once approved, the NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport. You do not need to print any documents.

You must travel using the same passport that was used for the application. On arrival, border officers will assess your entry and confirm the conditions and length of your stay.

Important Notes
  • An NZeTA is usually valid for multiple entries for up to two(2) years or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first.

  • You must apply for a new NZeTA if you change or renew your passport.

  • An approved NZeTA does not guarantee entry into New Zealand.

  • The NZeTA does not allow you to work or study without the appropriate visa.

  • You must meet health, character, and genuine visitor requirements at the border.

Applying early and providing accurate information helps ensure a seamless journey to New Zealand.
