What is a Canada eTA?

A Canada eTA, or Electronic Travel Authorisation, is an entry requirement for certain foreign nationals who travel to Canada by air. It is a digital authorisation that is electronically linked to your passport and allows you to board a flight to Canada for a short stay.

The eTA system was introduced to enhance border security while keeping travel simple for eligible visitors. It allows Canadian authorities to screen travellers before they arrive, helping to reduce delays and issues at the airport.

Having an approved eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. Canadian border officers made the final decision on arrival.

Who Needs a Canada eTA?

You need a Canada eTA if:

  • You are a citizen of a visa-exempt country

  • You are travelling to Canada by air

This applies to travellers visiting Canada for tourism, short business activities, family visits, or those transiting through a Canadian airport.

Important exceptions:

  • US citizens do not need an eTA

  • Visa-exempt travellers entering Canada by land or sea do not need an eTA

Each traveller must have their own approved eTA, including children and infants, even if the stay is very short.

What Does a Canada eTA Allow You to Do?

With a valid Canada eTA, you may:

  • Board a flight to Canada for a short visit

  • Enter Canada multiple times while the eTA remains valid

  • Request a stay of up to six months per visit, subject to approval by a border officer

A Canada eTA does not allow you to work in Canada or to study for more than six months. Separate authorisation is required for work permits and long-term study permits.

A Canada eTA is usually valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first.

During its validity period, you can travel to Canada multiple times without reapplying, provided you continue using the same passport and remain eligible.

In some cases, an eTA may be issued for a shorter period.
