How to Apply for a Canada eTA?

Applying for a Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a straightforward online process for travellers who are eligible for visa-exempt travel to Canada by air. Most applications are approved quickly; however, it is recommended to apply well in advance of your intended travel date.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, confirm that your nationality is eligible for a Canada eTA and that you are travelling to Canada by air for a short-term visit or in transit. Travellers entering Canada by land or sea do not require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).

If you are not eligible for an eTA, you may need to apply for a visitor visa instead.

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your trip, as the eTA is electronically linked to the passport used during the application.

Step 2: Prepare the Required Information

In most cases, the Canada eTA application does not require document uploads. You should have the following information ready:

  • A valid passport from an eligible country

  • A current email address

  • A debit or credit card

  • Basic personal details

  • Travel and employment information

  • Answers to background and security questions

All information must be accurate and complete. Errors or inconsistencies may result in delays or the refusal of your application.

Step 3: Complete the Online Application

The application is completed online and usually takes less than ten minutes. You will be asked to provide your personal details, including your passport information and travel history.

Ensure all information is accurate before submitting the application. A confirmation email will be sent once your application has been received.

Step 4: Receive Your eTA Decision

Most Canada eTA applications are approved within minutes, with the decision sent by email. In some cases, additional review may be required, which can extend processing time.

It is recommended not to finalise non-refundable travel arrangements until your eTA has been approved.

Step 5: Travel to Canada

Once approved, your eTA is electronically linked to your passport. You do not need to print any confirmation documents. You must travel using the same passport that was used to apply for the eTA.

Upon arrival, a Canadian border officer will determine whether you may enter Canada and how long you are authorised to stay.

Important Notes
  • A Canada eTA is valid for multiple entries for up to five(5) years or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first.

  • You must apply for a new eTA if you change or renew your passport.

  • An approved eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada.

  • An eTA does not allow you to work or study in Canada without the appropriate authorisation.

Applying early and ensuring all information is accurate helps support a smooth and stress-free journey to Canada.
